About Nature Park of Faial Island

The Nature Park of Faial Island encompasses the majority of Faial Island, part of the central group of the Azores archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean. Established as a protected natural park, it conserves an area characterized by dramatic volcanic scenery, including the famed Capelinhos Volcano—the site of the last volcanic eruption on the island in 1957-58. The park includes a variety of ecosystems such as laurel forests, coastal cliffs, freshwater lakes, and marine habitats that host diverse endemic flora and fauna. Faial’s volcanic geology offers a playground for hikers, bird watchers, divers, and cyclists. Key recreational opportunities include exploring the caldera of the Caldeira do Faial, viewing seabird colonies especially in protected marine zones, scuba diving along rich coral reefs, and visiting the volcanic sites that narrate the island’s geological evolution. Historical landmarks and cultural elements, such as remnants of old whaling stations and lighthouses, enrich the visitor experience. The park’s mixture of lush green landscapes and stark volcanic features amid the Atlantic’s temperate climate makes it a unique destination appealing year-round for outdoor enthusiasts seeking active nature immersion and scenic beauty.
